Skills Ontario and Magna International Partner for 2016 Ontario Technological Skills Competition

Mar 21 2016

Kitchener-Waterloo, ON, March 21, 2016 -- Skills Ontario is thrilled to announce that Magna International has partnered as a Gold Sponsor of the 2016 Ontario Technological Skills Competition (OTSC).  Magna International will be extending job opportunity placements* to the Gold, Silver, and Bronze award winners in the Automation Control, Industrial Mechanic Millwright and Mechatronics contests at Magna’s body and chassis facilities throughout Ontario -- in addition to also providing generous monetary awards for these top-placing competitors.

The OTSC has always been an event where competitors and students can network with future employers, but this will be the first year that job offers will be included as part of the competition awards. Skills Ontario is pleased to see the incentive for top-performing competitors take the direction of actual job offers and opportunities, and hope to see similar rewards for top competitors in other sectors and contests in the future.

“This opportunity speaks to the recognized quality of the young people who compete at the OTSC,” says Barry Harrison, Director of Competitions at Skills Ontario. “There is no better way to reward the most talented students in Ontario and we are pleased to see Magna recognize this incredible opportunity for both the students and the employer.”

The tremendous support for OTSC competitors that Magna International is offering sends a strong message to the corporate community that they believe creating a skilled and knowledgeable workforce in the skilled trades and technologies is imperative to the economic viability of Ontario.

David Worrall, VP of Global Human Resources for Magna’s body & chassis group of companies commented that “This partnership is a strategic step in our long term plan to provide skilled trade experts for Canada and the rest of the world. The OTSC has a strong history of surfacing top talent which allows employers such as Magna to offer job placements to the best of the best. We are proud to support continuing Technical Education in Ontario and be a partner in this year’s competition.”

The OTSC will be held at RIM Park in Waterloo, May 2nd-3rd, 2016; the top-placing competitors in the Automation Control, Industrial Mechanic Millwright and Mechatronics contests will find out about their job offers with Magna International at the OTSC Closing Ceremony on May 4th, 2016.
