67 competitors from across Ontario competed at the 2017 Skills Canada National Competition in Winnipeg, May 31 - June 3, 2017
Waterloo, Ontario – Last week, Team Ontario converged on Winnipeg, MB the Skills Canada National Competition, May 31 – June 3. Sixty-seven competitors in secondary and post-secondary levels, along with 51 advisors and parents represented Ontario well with their skills, talent, and team spirit.
Team Ontario is typically the largest team at the Skills Canada National Competition, and usually does very well in medal placings. 2017 continued that trend with Team Ontario earning 37 medals in 44 contest areas, 16 gold medals, 14 silver, and 7 bronze – more than any other province or territory.
Missy Archibald of Banting Memorial District High School, Simcoe County District School Board won gold in the Hairstyling contest (Secondary level), and was also honoured with the Best of Region award for Ontario.
Every other year is a qualifying year for the WorldSkills Competition (this year was not a qualifying year). This October, four members of last year’s Team Ontario will represent Team Canada at the 2017 WorldSkills Competition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates:
- Avery Bird & Theodor Willert of Humber College: Mechatronics
- Jonathan Adair of Georgian College: CNC Machining
- Anne Matiowsky of St. Lawrence College: Beauty Therapy
2018 is the next qualifying year for WorldSkills 2019 in Kazan, Russia.
