Skills Ontario is delighted to announce this year’s winners in our landscaping, construction, and manufacturing community involvement initiatives. Congratulations to this year’s winners!
Winner: Landscaping, sponsored by Permacon
College Heights Secondary School
A Student Voice group comprised of Green Industries students at College Heights Secondary School were interested in furthering the environmental stability of their school grounds, and envisioned a multi-phase landscape concept where they designed, built, and installed gardens, gazebos, and planting beds.
About 60 students planned, collaborated, and supported each other while working on this project, all while gaining experience in landscaping and working with others.
College Heights has been selected to receive paving stones, courtesy of Permacon, to continue their landscape development and other community projects they plan to be involved with. Congratulations, College Heights Secondary School!

Riverside Secondary School
The “Build a Dream” project is meant to provide female high schools students with the opportunity to explore trade-related careers in a week-long welding camp.
Twenty young women will be fabricating end tables from various metals and joining them together through the process of mig welding. They will not only learn how to use tools and equipment, but will also gain life skills, confidence, and the opportunity to see what a career in the trades could mean for them in the future.
Riverside Secondary School has been selected to receive a Miller Prize Pack, courtesy of Miller, to add to their welding program. Congratulations, Riverside Secondary School!

Lockerby Composite School
Each year, construction technology students from Lockerby Composite School embark on a building initiative to benefit Camp Manitou: Bay Islands. Camp Manitou is a not-for-profit children’s camp that relies solely on volunteers to run its programs and maintain its facilities.
Students have built a wood shed, pump house, generator building, outdoor furniture, and docks and ramps. They’ve also designed upgrades to the solar charging system, and built prototypes of different LED light fixtures to augment camp lighting.
Lockerby Composite School has been selected to receive a prize pack of Milwaukee tools, courtesy of Milwaukee, to continue their work at Camp Manitou. Congratulations, Lockerby Composite School!
