Waterloo, Ontario – The future of skilled trades and technology will be in the spotlight on Saturday, April 7, 2018 when hundreds of secondary school students from across the province take part in qualifying competitions to earn spots in the upcoming 2018 Skills Ontario Competition.
WHAT: Skills Ontario Qualifying Competitions
Students will compete in four of the most popular events at the secondary level, including Individual Carpentry, Culinary Arts, TV and Video Production (team of two) and Welding.
WHEN: Saturday, April 7, 2018, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
WHERE: Seven colleges will host day-long qualifying events for multiple school boards from across Ontario (click the link for specific location information):
- Canadore College, Northern Area
- Confederation College, Far Northern Area
- Fanshawe College, Western Area
- Georgian College, Near Northern Area
- Humber College, Central Area
- Niagara College, Southern Area
- St. Lawrence College, Eastern Area
WHY: The top three school boards in each contest from each qualifying competition will be eligible to compete at the 29th Skills Ontario Competition, which takes place May 7-9, 2018 at the Toronto Congress Centre in the GTA. More than 30,000 spectators are expected to attend the event to watch more than 2,000 elementary school, high school and post-secondary school students compete in nearly 70 contests.
At the Skills Ontario Competition, students compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as monetary awards and job offers for select contests. Gold medalists are also eligible to go on to represent Ontario at the Skills Canada National Competition on June 4-5, 2018 in Edmonton, AB.
Skills Ontario believes that there is no better way for a young person to start their career than by telling future employers that they are a gold, silver, or bronze medalist in their field. Many students train and prepare for the Skills Ontario Competition and the Qualifying Competitions throughout the year.
