Cameron McLean started volunteering with Skills Ontario as an Event Marshal for the Skills Ontario Competition last year – where he “was a real trooper,” adds Maresa MacAskill, our Director of Competitions. Cameron continued volunteering over the summer as a workshop leader at the Skills Ontario Summer Camp at Loyalist College.
Cameron is a Weston Foundation Fellow at Loyalist College, and now, as an Event Management and PR student, he will be doing an (unpaid) internship with Skills Ontario over part of April and May in the lead up to the Skills Ontario Competition.
Outside of his volunteer work with Skills Ontario, and through the Weston Foundation Fellowship, Cameron volunteers his skills with Magic Wheelchair, a non-profit organization in the United States that builds custom “costumes” for children in wheelchairs. Together with two other Weston Foundation Fellows, Stephen Zammitti and Rebecca Sweet, they started Magic Wheelchair’s first international chapter. With assistance from more than 25 students in various disciplines across campus, Zammitti, Sweet and MacLean designed the Big Red Car from the TV show The Wiggles for Brady Wilson, a six-year-old from Belleville. Wilson has Cerebral Palsy and is partially blind with limited verbal skills.
Thank you Cameron for your tremendous contributions to youth across Ontario – through your work with Skills Ontario and beyond!
